SMOKING POLICY
At its meeting of June 23, 1987, the School Committee of the City of Boston adopted a Smoking Policy for all Boston Public School employees, students, and visitors. The policy was developed by a planning team representing various constituencies of the School Department and of voluntary health agencies. This Smoking Policy is motivated by the philosophy that every staff person, student, and visitor should have the right to breathe clean air in the school and work environment and that, based on the most recent report of the Surgeon General, the School Committee should utilize its unique role to promote good health practices in this regard. This "clean-air policy" applies to all school department facilities including school buildings, administrative offices, supply room, warehouse facility, athletic fields, school department vehicles, etc. All students, staff and visitors to the school (including parents) are expected to comply.
This policy has been reinforced by both the Education Reform Act of 1993 and M.G.L. 370 Section 22, which state that the use of any tobacco products shall be prohibited within school buildings and facilities, on school grounds or on school buses by any individual, including school personnel.
Building administrators and supervisors shall have responsibility to:
-
inform all staff, students, and visitors of their obligations with respect to the policy.
-
supervise implementation of the policy.
These responsibilities shall be addressed initially by making staff aware of this circular, by posting the required signs and posters, by providing information and encouragement, and by serving as a positive role model for students, staff, and visitors.
Each school is encouraged to develop and implement a plan to address violations of this policy by any staff member, visitor or student.

posted 06/16/2011 The school uniform for the 2011/2012 school year will be modified as a result of feedback received over the course of the school year. This decision was made by the school's administrative staff and approved by the school site council. Many parents had complained that the light blue shirt did not hold up well over the course of the school year and that having a different color shirt for the upper grades added an unnecessary expense for students transitioning to those grades. In light of these concerns the decision was made to change the uniform to the following:
Shirts: Navy blue polo style shirt, Murphy Thunder T-Shirt or Navy Blue polo shirt with Murphy Logo. The Murphy Thunder t-shirt and Murphy logo polo can be purchased through the main office. The plain navy blue polo shirt can be purchased at most department stores or school uniform providers.
Pants: Khaki colored. Girls are permitted to wear khaki colored skirts or jumpers.
This uniform policy is mandatory and applies to all grades. Any questions regarding this policy should be directed to the main office.
| | | | posted 03/01/2010 The Murphy School Parent Council approved the funding for this website. We have long desired to construct a website to better communicate with our large school community. We understand that many families are unable to attend our monthly meetings but are eager to stay informed and get involved to the extent possible. We hope this website helps facilitate that.
We will continually be adding information and features that will be of interest to our school community so we encourage you to check back frequently. One of the features we added is a registration feature. This allows our families to register as members of the site which allows us to communicate with them via e-mail. We are also working with the school administrators and the faculty so that they will be able to take advantage of this website and use it as a communication tool as well.
If you have ideas for content you would like to see included on the website or questions about it use please e-mail us via the Feedback button.
